The Evolution of Technology
Technology has played a major part in allowing humans to build the many societies in the world. It has helped shape the way humans are today, in both good and bad ways. The word technology comes from ancient greek where ‘techne’ means art and craft, while the word ‘logos’ means word and speech. At first, the word technology was used to describe arts. While the more common usage of the word is to describe advancement and changes which affect the environment around us. Early technology was way simpler than what we are used to today. This included the wheel, which was a crucial part in being able to travel easier and discover other places with other people. Also in the scientific field, where experimenting with plants, herbs and animals to create medicine and other things.
As humans progressed, technology got more and more advanced. With the Industrial Revolution around 1760-1830, technology got an extreme upgrade. The iron bridges who allowed for even more safer and easier travel and transportation. The steam engines who pushed for more productivity with factories and allowed for machinery.
The Second Industrial Revolution was an even bigger and more important time for technology. Advancement within transportation, construction etc. and also introduced a revolutionizing new way of communication. Telegraphy allowed for people to call each other from great distances.
During the 20th century there was a large improvement in telecommunications and more people had access to telegraphy. Also a mass production of automobiles occurred which allowed almost everyone to own one. Military advancement was a crucial part of World War I. Guns were easier to produce and more efficient firearms were made. Jet engines which allowed for more military force and was a huge advantage.
Moving to the present day, technology has come a long way. Humans have now claimed to be closing in on finding out more about what is outside of our own home. Multiple organizations exist to research what is on other planets and if there are more living organisms than who and what lives on Earth. Every single person on the planet has accessibility to telegraphy and way more. Almost everything you need can be gained through our smartphones. It is weird to imagine how people lived without it. If you asked a person 100 years ago what they thought today would look like, their answer would probably be extremely incorrect. If we ask ourselves the same question, we would guaranteed be far off. What is the next step in technology? What will the world look like in 100 years? There are many answers to this question. Truth to be told, just thinking about it makes me both excited and frightened.
